This unique home is in the Pyrenean foothills and close to the Mediterranean. It forms part of a mediaeval citadel in the historic heart of a lively market town, in a quiet secluded corner yet a stone's throw away from good shops and restaurants. It has a garage and a south-west facing rooftop sun terrace as well as a totally private shady courtyard at ground level. The house is fitted with equipment for modern living in both summer and winter. It overlooks a picturesque circular Place which is paved in local marble.
The house sleeps 4 to 6 people and has been lovingly cared for over the past nearly 30 years by its current owners, a Scottish doctor and his artist wife. Its accessibility from various nearby airports in southern France and Spain [Perpignan, Beziers, Carcassonne, Montpellier, Gerona, Barcelona] along with its very easy maintenance makes this house a very special holiday home in all seasons of the year.
ABOUT THE AREA
Le Roussillon is a beautiful part of France. As the market garden of Europe, it grows a wide variety of soft fruit and produces wine of the Cotes du Roussillon appellation. The mountain backdrop to this house provides hill-walking opportunities, visits to Cathar castles, and skiing for all levels in winter. Several ski resorts are an hour's drive away. In summer the beaches of the Mediterranean are only half an hour away. The pretty seaside town of Collioure is very popular. The coastal villages have yachting and other water sport opportunities. There is a vibrant art and music scene plus folk festivals, celebrating everything from wine, cheese, honey and even snails.
