Melle, a historic town 9km away, has a wider range of facilities plus other attractions such as an arboretum, Norman churches, walks, gym, a silver mine which belonged to the Kings of France and a large swimming pool. Other places within an easy day's drive are the cities of Anglouleme, Limoges, Cognac and Saintes. The departmental capital, Niort, a city with many tourist features as well as station, hospital and historic keep, is 33km away. To the west there is the popular tourist area known as the Marais Poitevin, or Green Venice, because of the number of verdant waterway and associated paths which nowadays have lots of recreational uses such as walks, cycling, fishing and boating as well as birdwatching.
