ABOUT THE AREA
The house is in the small village of Montazels, which is located in the heart of the atmospheric and popular Cathar countryside. It is approximately 6 kilometres from the well known town of Rennes le Chateau. Montazels is in an elevated setting, five minutes walk from the small riverside town of Couiza, which has shops, services, cafes and a regular market.
The house is in a very tourism friendly region which offers perfect potential for gites or a B&B investment as the barn could be easily converted - subject, of course to the usual permissions. The Tour de France seems to enjoy planning a stage in this area on a regular basis and this is a great visitor attraction. The neighbouring village of Esperaza hosts a traditional and beautiful French market with local produce at least twice a week. Montazels and Couiza may be small and rural, but they also have their own primary school and kindergarden which adds to the life of the community. The children move on to Limoux for their secondary education. The Haute Vallee de l'Aude is also a very engaged community ecologically and hosts a 4 day Organic and Sustainable Festival event in August each year.
The wider area is filled with history and culture and also offers great opportunities for cycling and walking, with several ancient paths passing close by the property. Made of dry stones, the paths will take you amongst the wild rosemary, thyme and lavender which scent the air, with almonds, fig trees and Mediterranean pines or cypresses providing shade. There are beautiful views over the Pyrenees, which can easily be reached for skiing in the winter. It is a truly picturesque region, where dinosaurs use to walk and nest! Once here, there is no need for a car as essentials are all within easy reach. The area even has its own renowned sparkling wine - Blanquette de Limoux. From bird spotting ( eagles, vultures, nightingales) to festivals, this regions will always seduce in more ways than one.
There is an hourly bus running between Limoux and Quillan. Spain is only 2 hours away and the Pyrenees are 1 hour. Trains run from Limoux to Carcassonne too. The house is 45min by car from Carcassonne Airport.
